1977 Hellinger Award Winner- Valerie Mottes Reed

 

Valerie Mottes was presented the Hellinger Award in 1977 given her outstanding GPA (highest in the journalism class) and extensive involvement with media on campus. She was the editor of The Bona Venture when the newspaper received a second place finish nationally from the Society of Collegiate Journalists and was president of Kappa Tau Alpha, as well as a member of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalists and in addition to serving as a resident assistant also was the vice president of Press Club. Mottes was named to "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities" for 1977.

Mottes was also the winner of a Newspaper Fund Fellowship that placed her with the Hackensack (New Jersey) Record. The Marlboro, New Jersey native eventually married 1975 Hellinger winner William Reed.
